London is a wonderful place to visit at any time of year, but most especially during winter. There's a vibrant and electric energy, making London very pretty once the sun goes down. This makes it a great time of year for visitors
and there are many popular hotspot which are particularly good at this time of year.
Whether you enjoy
Soho and Chelsea or find Camden more your
scene, London can cater to all types of people and personalities. For those looking for tips for their London getaway this winter, keep reading.
1.
Wrap Up Warm
A fairly obvious one considering England is renowned for our crappy weather. Although London is
a busy place with lots of people and lots of pollution to make the city warmer, it can be bitterly cold in winter and you are likely to spend a fair amount of
time outside - even the underground stations can get very chilly. It's for
this reason you need to wrap up warm during a winter getaway here. Layers are a smart move so you can simply
take them off when you are inside or if you are on a packed tube where it gets a bit sweaty.
2.
Plan Days Out Ahead of Time
The last thing
that you want during a day out is to be stood around shivering, not knowing
where you are going next or how to get there. Plan your day in advance each morning, including
your modes of transport - bus, tube, uber ; this will reduce the amount of
time spent outside in the cold as well as be able to fit more into your days.
3.
Indoor Activities
It's certainly worthwhile exploring the streets and
parks of London in winter because they can be very
beautiful at this time of year, but when it is bitterly cold or raining, it's a good idea to find a warmer, indoor source of entertainment. In London, you're spoilt for choice. A few good options include:
Plays, Shows and Musicals: A visit to the West End is a must. You can find cheap London musical tickets relatively easily online. These are fun
and impressive shows in iconic venues and an
important London experience, plus it will be nice and warm! My favourites include Lion King, Matilda and School of Rock.
Museums and Galleries: London is famous for
its many incredible museums and galleries, which are ideal to explore on a rainy day. The Science Museum and Natural History Museum are
must-see highlights on a getaway here, but my favourite is the Tate Modern which always has the most amazing exhibits.
Food & Drink: London is worth visiting for its fantastic range of
cafes, restaurants, pubs, and
bars alone, especially instagrammable ones. This is a way to escape the
cold, immerse yourself in the culture, meet new people and try new things - important for a visit somewhere new. If you're after a good Instagram photo, Elan Cafe, Peggy Porschen Cakes and Dominque Ansel are great places to visit for their floral backdrops, beautiful dishes and a lovely, pretty environment to grab a hot drink and a cake.
4.
Outdoor Activities
When the weather
is suitable (which could be very rare), London can be brilliant to
explore during the winter on foot. Everything is quite close together so most parks, public spaces and markets that bring
the city to life during winter, are easily accessible and just a short walk away, wherever you are. Exploring the city on foot is the best way to soak up
the atmosphere and get your bearings.
London really comes to life during winter which makes
it a superb place for a winter getaway. In order
to get the most out of your stay, it's important
to be aware of how to navigate the city and what
to do if the conditions are bad - we hope we've helped you become well-prepared.
