DIY Velvet Manicure Tutorial

I love the new concepts that Ciaté bring out but I refuse to pay the price that they charge when it's possible to recreate the look at home for a fraction of the cost. To do this "Velvet" manicure you will need some nail polish in the same colour as your velvet, an old make up brush, a box or tray and some velvet. I bought mine on eBay for about 1.00. A polish of any colour will work as long as it kind of goes with the velvet powder. I also tried this with Models Own lilac dream. The polish in this picture is Bourjois bleu asphalte.

I chose grey because I love having darker nails in winter. The velvet powder was lighter than I anticipated and looked a bit like dust. Which I'm fine with because I had a similar coloured polish.

Remember to remove any existing nail polish before you begin. Even if you don't have painted nails, cleaning them with some nail varnish remover will remove any dirt and oils. I painted my nails with a strengthening base coat because my nails are super weak at the moment but this stage is optional!
To start off, paint one coat of nail polish on your nails. It really doesn't matter how badly you do it! As soon as that's vaguely dry paint on another thickish-coat. If it's too thin, it will dry too quickly, not giving you enough time to put the velvet on.

Tap some velvet powder out of the container of the nail. You can be generous because any extra can be poured back into the tub after- thats what the box beneath is for!

After a few seconds, pat down the powder with the old make up brush and remove any excess. Be careful not to press too hard because you'll end up pushing off half the polish too. Alternatively you can just get a pinchful of powder and press it onto the nail.

Don't use any topcoat as this will ruin the velvet effect!

This was my first try which is why it looks squiffy. I knew after this attempt to apply more polish and pour on a thicker layer of velvet powder. I think it gives a great textured effect, and when done properly, looks really pretty.
Have you tried a velvet manicure yet?

    1. I'm the same, but surprisingly I barely noticed it. And it is really tricky to get off, I had to soak cotton balls in acetone and hold them on my nails for a while!
